PSYC 215 Chapter Notes - Chapter 9: Social Proof, Normative Social Influence, Ideomotor Phenomenon
Document Summary
Social influence = the ways people affect on another. Conformity = changing one"s behaviour or belief"s in response to explicit or implicit pressure (real or imagined) from others. Compliance = responding favourably to an explicit request by another person. Obedience = in an unequal power relationship, submitting to the demands of the person in authority. Group 1: participants describe a picture while confederate shook foot. Group 2: participants did the same while confederate rubbed faces. Participants conformed to what the confederate was doing. Ideomotor action = the phenomenon whereby thinking about a behaviour makes performing it more likely. We mimic others to make interactions more smoother and friendlier. Mirroring is better received in hipsanic-americans than anglo-americans. Informational social influence = the influence of other people that results from taking their comments or action as a source of information about what is correct, proper, or effective. Informational social influence study: light moving in darkness.
