PSYC 328 Chapter Notes - Chapter 13: Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery, Coronary Artery Disease, Coronary Circulation
Document Summary
This is all well and good for acute stress, not so good for chronic stress. Chd refers to illness caused by atherosclerosis: narrowing or block in the coronary arteries (vessels that supply heart and body with blood) When vessels become narrowed or closed, the flow of oxygen and nourishment to the heart is partially or completely obstructed. Temporary shortages of oxygen and nourishment frequently causes pain called: angina pectoris (i. e. chest pain), hear attack, or stroke. When severe deprivation occurs, a heart attack (myocardial infarction) can result. Chd is a disease of inflammation: a proinflammatory cytokine (il-6) plays a role in chd by stimulating build-up of atherosclerotic plaques, c-reactive protein in the blood assesses inflammation and is strong predictor of chd. Level of c-reactive protein in bloodstream strong predictor of heart disease (better than cholesterol) Produced in the liver and released in the blood stream in the presence of acute or chronic inflammation.
