PSYC 332 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Inclusive Fitness, Signify, Conduct Disorder
Document Summary
For actors: i do, therefore i am. Aristotle stated that doing depended on the actor"s ability to convey emotion through behaviour. Skilled actors learn how to control the emotions expressed, perfecting the art of observing the self in order to manage the impression of others. For cognitive eusocial species (homo sapiens), this is similar to what happens in everyday social life. Erving goffman describes human social behaviour as a series of performances through which actors play roles and enact scripts in order to manage the impressions of other characters in the social scene. During a performance (eg. everyday social performances), a social actor will enact a routine= a pre-established pattern of action which is unfolded during a performance and which may be presented or played through on other occasions. Examples of routines: eating lunch with friends, attending meetings, working out at the gym, etc. Each routine has its own predictable course, while still having room for improvisation.
