Walter mischel summarized state of field: low cross- situational behavior is low. Wanted to know if there is such a thing as personality. We can"t. knowing how someone responds in one situation can only help you predict how someone would behave in another situation by 55% (a little more than chance) Any single observation is subject to a lot of noise. With many observation and calculating correlation, this would be a more reliable index of their behavior. With all these observations, we could remove the random noise. We assume that: consistency correlation of 0. 16 is true, we can sample many people across many situations. Conclusion: we can predict average future behavior by using average past behavior, ex. 100 observations of jane for honesty and trustworthiness. We can predict with certainty the future distribution of behavior (90 of 100 future behaviors) Argued that by knowing past average behavior, we cannot predict how she will behave in specific situation in the future.
