Document Summary

Psyc408: lecture 13: reading: randomized trial of behavioural. Activation (ba), cognitive therapy (ct), and antidepressant (adm) Medication in the acute treatment of adults with major depression (mdd) dimidjian et al. Antidepressants are the current standard for depression. However, not all patients want to take medication. Cognitive therapy has not demonstrated consistent efficacy across trials. Dismantling designs have suggested that behavioural components may account for the efficacy of cognitive therapy. The current investigation tested the efficacy of behavioural activation by comparing it with cognitive therapy and antidepressant medication in a randomized controlled trial in adults with major depressive disorder. Among more severely depressed patients, behavioural activation (ba) was comparable to antidepressant medication (adm), and both significantly outperformed cognitive therapy (ct). The best known controlled treatment trial of cognitive therapy found that it was less effective than antidepressant medication (adm), and no more effective than placebo among the most severely depressed participants.
