PSYC 471 Chapter Notes - Chapter 6: Edward L. Deci, Humanistic Psychology, Anorexia Nervosa
Document Summary
Chapter six: the inner force of development (part two: the role of interpersonal connectedness) There are different branches of psychology that had emerged. The psychoanalytic tradition: freud, the reasons people act and feel as they do are deep within them. The empirical tradition: the causes of people"s actions are the reinforcements they receive. Humanistic psychology: carl rogers, evolved from the psychoanalytic tradition. Psychoanalytic + humanistic: understand human behaviour in terms of motivational and emotional dynamics, focus on promoting awareness as the basis for change, build theory using observations and direct experience. Behavioural theory: within the empirical tradition, b. f. skinner, focuses on observable behaviours and the environmental conditions that reinforce them. A lot of theorists focus on individuals" thoughts rather than just observable behaviours and environmental reinforcements. Behaviours are explained in terms of people"s thoughts about reinforcements, their expectations and their interpretations, instead of just the objective description of reinforcements themselves.
