PSYC 471 Chapter Notes - Chapter 12: Edward L. Deci
Document Summary
People differ from each other for every human characteristic - so each person has a different starting place. Children are born with individual differences on both physical and psychological levels, e. g. differences in temperament. The more vital and proactive children are, the better starting point they have in developing an autonomous self. As a result, children who are raised in poverty will fare worse than those raised in nurturing environments. We wonder why some kids from impoverished environments are still able to do well despite their poor external influences. Often enough, people who come from difficult backgrounds had some person in their life who really believed in them and gave them the support they needed to believe in themselves. People get influenced by the social world, but they also influence the social world that influences them. Children who are personable, vital, and proactive, are likely to bring out the best out of their caregivers.
