Larger & more complex w/ more organelles: many multicellular organisms (not all though, most w/ sexual reproduction. But note that first eukaryotes were single celled. All eukaryotes that are not land plants, animals or fungi. Not a monophyletic clade - some more closely related to plants, fungi or animals than other protists. General characteristics: more structural & functional diversity than any other group of organisms, often unicellular but can colonial & multicellular too. Include photoautotrophs (chloroplasts), heterotrophs, mixotrophs (both photosynthesis & heterotrophic nutrition): diff nutritional modes arose independently in diff protist lineages. 3 ecological categories of protists: photosynthetic (algae) Cause disease & illnesses in plants & animals. Irish potato famine caused by a parasitic fungust-like protist. Some species are primary producers: creates own food by photosynthesis and is a food source for other species: the ultimate source of e for all other consumers.
