Document Summary
Class 8 additions: explain how information systems can help companies turn information into knowledge, and build partnerships, teams and alliances. The advent and proliferation of network-based systems has enabled organizations to build systems with which all sorts of communities can interact. Without collaboration companies simply would have a very difficult time operating. Companies collaborate in a number of ways including document exchange, shared whiteboards, discussion forums, supply chain management systems, video conferencing, and e-mail. Collaboration technologies fall into one of two categories: Unstructured collaboration (sometimes referred to as information collaboration) includes document exchange, shared whiteboards, discussion forums, and e-mail. Groupware supports team interaction by supporting calendaring, scheduling and videoconferencing. Organizations can use this technology to communicate, cooperate, coordinate, solve problems, compete or negotiate. Content management systems provide tools to manage the creation, storage, editing, and publication of information in a collaborative environment.
