Other environmental chemicals may act indirectly to influence hormonal balance by altering hormone production, hormone transport on binding proteins, receptor numbers on target organs, or hormone metabolism: i. e. polychlorinated biphenyls (pcbs) interfere with thyroid function by many function, incl. increased metabolism of the thyroid hormone t4, interference with t4"s delivery to the developing brain by displacement. Prenatal exposure: females vaginal cancer, reproductive tract abnormalities; males cryptorchidism, hypospadias, semen abnormalities. Human (in utero exposure) delayed neurological development; iq deficits hormone (tsh) (high doses thyromimetic) Reduces gonadotropin released hormone (gnrh) from the hypothalamus; reduces pituitary luteinizing hormone (lh) levels; interferes with the metabolism of estradiol, blocks estrogen binding; increases aromatase related conversion of androgens to estrogens. Binds to ah (aryl hydrocarbon) receptor; increases estrogen metabolism; decreases estrogen mediated gene transcription, decreases estrogen levels; decreases testosterone levels by interfering with hypothalamic pituitary gonadal (hpg) axis. Male decreased testosterone, hypospadias, hypospermia, delayed testicular descent; feminized sexual behavior; human decreased.
