Document Summary

Psychology chapter 17: the nature and causes of psychological disorders. Kraepelin = first person to classify psychological disorders. Psychological disorders are characterized by abnormal behaviour, thoughts, and feelings. Medical perspective -> started with hippocrates said that four humours (black bile, yellow bile, blood, and phlegm) led to emotional problems led to formation of asylums, but they were poorly run and contributed to the patient"s disorders. Now, after reforms, the quality of the facilities have improved dramatically. No single perspective = completely adequate when looking at the origins of psychological disorders -> different approaches can be combined. Diathesis-stress model: a casual account of psychological disorders based on the idea that psychological disorders develop when a person possesses a predisposition for a disorder and faces stressors that exceed his/her abilities to cope with them. Biopsychosocial perspective: a view that the causes of psychological disorders can be best understood in terms of the interaction of biological, psychological, and social factors.
