PSYB32H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Occupational Therapist, Unclean Spirit, Trepanning
Document Summary
Abnormal behaviour- there is no single definition for abnormal behaviour that captures it in its entirety. Statistical infrequency (extremes on bell curve) e. g digit span. Unexpectedness e. g worrying about financial problems after winning the lottery. *note: distress does not equal disability/dysfunction; a disorder isn"t really a disorder until it causes dysfunction. The prolem with statistical norms as a measure is it does not provide guidance in determining which infrequent behaviors would deem someone as abnormal e. g having superb athletic ability is infrequent but few would regard it as abnormal. Whether the behaviour violates social norms, threatens or makes anxious those observing it. Impairment in some important area of life because of an abnormality. Problem with this is we don"t have a rule that tells us which disabilities belong and which do not e. g substance abuse/addiction causes disability and/or dysfunction thus we label it as abnormal.
