Chapter 1: Understanding emotions th - 19 century founders o Charles Darwin: evolutionary approaches Humans are animals, which have unique facial muscles to express human sentiments unknown to other animals Some emotions are left over from previous ancestors uses, in which evolution has kept, but has no more use anymore (sneering, showing teeth) Emotions link us to our past (historic and infancy) o William James Non common sense approach, we encounter exciting factsevents and emotions is our perception of changes in the body as we react to that fact Emotions string from changes in the autonomic nervous system (heart, sweat glands, stomach, muscles) Emotions give colour and warmth to experience o Sigmund Freud Emotions are the core of many pathologies (more later) - Philosophical and literary approaches o Aristotle: the conceptual approach Emotions connected with action (many assume it happens without our control) Emotion is based on what we believe and how we evaluate the world Aristotles rhetoric: how do we persuade others? 1) Ppl believe good ppl over bad ppl 2) Persuaded if it stirs emotions 3) Persuaded if they seem truthful Various judgements lead to different emotions Anger leads to impulse and pain Slighted emotion is to be treated with contempt, or shame www.notesolution.com
