Document Summary
Interpersonal conflict occurs when one person, group, or subunit frustrate the goal attainment of another, include antagonistic attitudes and behaviors. Prevalence of intergroup bias means organizations will have to pay special attention to managing relationships between teams. Ambiguity- ambiguous goals, jurisdictions, or performance criteria causes rules that govern interaction to break down, difficult to accurately assign praise or blame for outcomes. Scarce resources- can turn disguised conflict into overt conflict. Relationship conflict- interpersonal tensions among people that have to do with their relationship not the task at hand. Task conflict- disagreements about the nature of work to be done. Process conflict- disagreements about how work should be organized and accomplished. Relationship and process conflict detrimental, some degree of task conflict beneficial. Approaches to managing conflict are a function of how assertive and cooperative you are. None of the 5 approaches are inherently superior. Avoiding- (low a, low c) hiding one"s head in the sand response.
