BU288 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Work Motivation, Motivation, Peter Salovey
Document Summary
Basic characteristics of motivation: effort, persistence, direction, goals task, it is self-applied (e. g. feelings of achievement or challenge) The motivation-performance relationship: other factors that can affect performance are: not fully understanding the job, and encountering unavoidable obstacles over which they have no control. Research support for expectancy theory: moderately favourable support, generally accepted, hard to test because it is so complex and perceptual. Equity theory: compare inputs invested and the outcomes received against others(cid:495) inputs and outputs. Individuals are motivated to maintain an equitable exchange relationship: can reduce inequality by changing your way of thinking and behaviour. If you think you deserve more you may put less inputs in and if you think you deserve less than you may put more inputs in. Gender and equity: men tend to compare themselves to men, women with women, somewhat explains why women are paid less for the same job.
