Based on the noion that the task of psychology is to analyze consciousness into its basic elements and invesigate how these elements are related. Most of their work concerned sensaion and percepion in vision, hearing, and touch. Depended on introspecion- the careful, systemaic self-observaion of one"s own conscious experience. The fact that it was subjecive lead to its demise. Psychology should invesigate the funcion or purpose of consciousness rather than its structure. James wanted to understand the stream of consciousness (the low rather than the structure) Tested things like: development in children, educaional pracices, and diferences between the sexes. Both schools (structuralism and funcionalism) faded away but along came behaviorism and applied psychology. Watson theoreical orientaion based on the premise that scieniic psychology should study only observable behavior. Believed psychology needed to study the observable because its objecive and to do that it needed to give up consciousness as its subject mater.
