LECTURE 9: - Study of the Heinrich Walter climate diagrams for each of the nine biomes discussed in class is important; your textbook is followed closely here! - Tropical rainforests (equator to 10 latitude): cover ~6% of Earths land area, contain some 50% of all species, especially insects living in the upper canopy of trees; nutrients are recycled very quickly (highly efficient detritivore system!), leaving soils nutrient- poor; as many as 600 tree speciesha and 20,000 insect speciesha; rainforests are storehouses of biodiversity, but are NOT the lungs of the Earth (they essentially consume all the oxygen they generate themselves) 0 - Deserts (mostly near 30 latitude): cover >20% of Earths land area (in addition, ice deserts, such as in Antarctica, add another 6% or so); there is never (except briefly following storms) enough precipitation to s
