Document Summary

Perception-the process of interpreting the messages of our senses to provide order and meaning to environment. Ppl base their actions on the interpretation of reality that their perceptual system provides, rather than on reality itself. Influence other"s perception --> need to manipulate perception. Subjectivity comes from exposure (bias, errors, and mistakes), attention or interpretation. Exposure: occurs when a stimulus comes within range of someone"s sensory receptors. Attention: extent to which processing activity is devoted to a particular stimulus. Interpretation: the meaning that we assign to sensory stimuli. Compoments of perception: a perceiver, a target that is being perceived, some situational context in which the perception is occurring. Each component influences the perceiver"s impression or interpretation of the target. Past experiences lead the perceiver to develop expectations that affect current perceptions. Needs unconsciously influence perceptions by causing us to perceiver what we wish to perceive. Emotions, such as anger, happiness, or fear can influence our perceptions.
