Env222 - lecture 7 - clean production, ecomodernisation, geoengineering, Shifting from discussing problems potential sustainable solutions. A sustainable society would require not just environmental, but social changes (ex. addressing issues like poverty, water supply) Sustainable development: development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs . Issue with sustainable development: what do we want to sustain? (david orr), green models still suggested that sustainability requires economic growth/progress is based on an idea of development. The regenerative design framework: suggests there are different levels of sustainability. Conventional practice: compliance to avoid legal actions. Sustainable: neutral point of not doing any more damage. Reconciliatory: reintegrating humans as integral parts of nature. Regenerative appropriate: appropriate participation and design as nature. Recall: ipat, technology is only one part of the solution, it alone cannot save us: greening: relative improvements, about reducing harm but not regenerating ecosystems (but is a good start to sustainability)
