Pyruvate kinase deficiency is an inherited metabolic disorder that affects the survival of red blood cells. Erythrocytes have no mitochondria and are thus dependent on glycolysis and fermentation for their energy needs. A blood smear of pyruvate kinase deficient erythrocytes shows that the cells are misshapen and swollen; they have lost their flexible discoid shape and eventually lyse. Explain how pyruvate kinase deficiency can lead to the lysis of red blood cells.
