PSYC 328 Chapter 11: Chapter 11 Notes.doc
Document Summary
Gauge extent to which normal life activities have been compromised by disease/treatment. Limitations in physical activities because of physical health problems. Limitations in usual role activi- ties because of physical health problems. Limitations in social activities because of physical or emotion- al problems. Limitations in usual role activi- ties because of emotional prob- lems. What are the emotional responses to chronic illness: acute, temporary first phase when all life activities disrupted, chronic: crisis stage/disequilibrium. Coping; cause need to make intermittent/permanent changes in physical/vo- cational/social activities, then integrate patient role into lives psychologically to adapt to disorder (rehabilitation). Denial: a defense mechanism by which people avoid implications of an illness. Denial can serve a protective function in acute stage when patient may be least able to deal with it. Study: patients with myocardial infarction found high initial denial associated with fewer days in intensive care and fewer signs of cardiac dysfunction.
