Background and context
Microbes are single-celled prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms that cannot be seen with naked eyes. Prokaryotes lack membrane-bound organelles. They do have a plasma membrane, ribosomes, DNA (not enclosed within a membrane), and cytoplasm. Eukaryotes have membrane-bound organelles like the nucleus and endoplasmic reticulum. Microbes are found in many shapes and sizes. Examples of microbes are bacteria, fungi, viruses, etc.
