Background and context
Multicellular organisms release some materials like proteins into the extracellular space. the most common protein released is collagen. This collagen is interwoven with carbohydrate-containing proteins called proteoglycans. Collagen along with proteoglycans is called the extracellular matrix. The extracellular matrix helps in the formation of tissues and allows cells to communicate with each other.
