Short answer example:
Describe the concept of the critical period and how it applies to language. What is some
evidence for the existence of a critical period?
The critical period is a time period according to Nativists that children can acquire
a skill. For language there is a critical period that exists when children are young,
and if they are not exposed to a stimulating social environment, they will not
Genie, Romanian children
For example Genie was raised in seclusion and did not get stimulation that would
have allowed her to develop language. Teaching her later proved difficult and she
never fully grasped language, having missed the critical period for language
development which led to her developing language abnormally.

Answer to question
A critical period is a set period of time in which a skill or behaviour is much more
easily developed according to Nativists. If it is missed, it will be harder to develop
or won’t ever be highly developed.
A time during development when the brain is responsive and can learn a certain
skill. If it is missed, it is fairly difficult to pick up. Sensitive period (still is easiest
to develop then) vs. critical period (skill won’t develop normally later.)
Critical period for language is during the first few years of life, and learning the
mechanics of language. A sufficient environment is essential to the development
of language. Needs interaction with parents and other speakers to reason out
Genie story, who was severely abused during childhood. She was neglected and
raised in seclusion. She had no social environment to learn language – isolation is
key factor. She missed stimulation during the critical period, and she never quite
developed language to her full potential; she could never develop displacement or
generativity. Also nutrition.
Feedback Definition of critical period: set period of time in which a skill is more readily
developed. If the skill isn’t developed in that period of time, it does not develop
Learning overall structure of language is important, and the child requires
stimulation in an environment in which language is present.
