BUS 272 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Long Term Ecological Research Network, Stereotype, Fundamental Attribution Error
Document Summary
Perception: the process by which individuals organize and interpret their impressions to give meaning to their environment. Perceptual errors - perceiving things the way others do takes time: attribution theory. Attribution theory: tries to explain the ways we judge people differently, depending on the meaning we attribute to a given behaviour. When we observe atypical behaviour, we try to make sense of it. Selective perception: selectively noticing different characteristics because we cannot observe absolutely everything around us: halo effect. Halo effect: when a general impression is drawn on the basis of a single characteristic - e. g. intelligence, likeability, or appearance: contrast effects. Contrasts effects: our reaction to one person is often in uence by other people we have recently encountered: projection. Projection: attributing your own characteristics onto other people: stereotyping. Stereotyping: when we judge someone on the basis of our perception of the group to which they belong.
