Coordinating Conjunctions
One way of combining sentences to make your writing more mature is by using a coordinating conjunction. This makes two sentences into a single, compound sentence - a sentence with two separate subjects and two separate verbs.
Coordinating Conjunctions: FANBOYS
F: For
A: And
N: Not
B: But
O: Or
Y: Yet
S: So
Punctuation:
If you are putting two complete sentences together with a coordinating conjunction, you need a comma before the coordinating conjunction.
Example: Andrew woke up late. Andrew made it to school on time
Andrew woke up late, yet he made it to school on time. (Two complete sentences joined by comma and "yet.")

2) You can also combine sentences by making one of them incomplete. If you are joining a complete sentence with an incomplete sentence. (e.g. a phrase that does not have both a subject, and verb), you don't need a comma before the coordinating conjunction.

Which correctly combines the two sentences below using a coordinating conjunction?
The hike to the top of the canyon was only eight miles. It took us all day.
A. The hike on the two of the canyon was only eight miles, but it took us all day.
a. The hike to the top of the canyon was only eight miles but it took us all day.
