THE BIG FIVE The Big Five (five-factor theory): The idea that personality can be described using five traits i) Openness to experience (imaginative vs. down to earth, variety vs. routine) ii) Conscientiousness (organized vs. disorganized, careful vs. careless) iii) Extraversion (social vs. retiring, affectionate vs. reserved) iv) Agreeableness (softhearted vs. ruthless, helpful vs. uncooperative) v) Neuroticism (worried vs. calm, self pitying vs. self satisfied) Easy way to remember them: OCEAN Each of these five factors is a higher order trait comprising of lower-order traits that are related toeach other.
