Central Asia is the central region of Asia which extends from the Caspian Sea in the west to the border of western China in the east. It is bounded by Russia in the north, Iran, Afghanistan, and China in the south. The former Soviet republics of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Turkmenistan make up this region. Almost 60 percent of the region is composed of desert lands such as the Karakum in Turkmenistan and the Kyzylkum in Uzbekistan. The region experiences very dry climatic condition and low precipitation. The scarcity of water resulted in uneven population distribution. Most people lived along the fertile river banks or mountain foothills.
